Ski Helmet

Kelly Canyon Family Ski Resort

Did you know your ski helmet should be replaced every three years or after a bad crash?

If you have a growing skier or an adult skier from another, non-helmet-wearing era (Dad I’m thinking of you) a new ski helmet is the perfect gift.

Mountain Dad bought a helmet like this for me last year. It’s got MIPS technology that is supposed to help in a crash, but it’s a bit pricey at $200 or more.

This is the helmet I bought for my kids. Warm, comfortable, and inexpensive ($20-45) the Giro Slingshot helmet is perfect for ages 4-8. Easily adjustable, lightweight and with a tough exterior, the Giro Slingshot Youth Helmet is perfect for kid skiing. I especially like the built in goggle strap.

See all of our ski gear recommendations here.

TOBE Outerwear Mono Suits

Last season TOBE Outerwear sent my fam some ski suits for us to try out and man I love them. They are such high quality and totally awesome that I never have to worry about them feeling cold.

The only problem is the cost. They are hundreds of dollars each (TOBE Outerwear also makes adult monosuits) which is of course outrageous for a child’s snowsuit, but they are SO AWESOME.

Shred Dog Ski Gear

If you don’t have hundreds to spend on kid’s outerwear, check out Shred Dog Ski Gear. This startup has a premium snow gear for kids at 40% of the cost.

Their direct-to-consumer business model allows them to cut out the middleman and pass those savings on to you. Get a $150 hardshell jacket for just $90 if you pre-order before November 20, 2018!

In fact Marc and Dallas from Shred Dog taught me all about why their cold weather gear for kids is the best their is in this post.

Darn Tough Socks

The best stocking stuffers for skiers…are more stockings. Wool socks are essential for happy toes when skiing. Wool wicks away sweat from the skin and keeps warmth in even if it gets wet.

That’s why wool socks are my favorite for skiing. And our favorite brand of good ski socks are Darn Tough.

Darn socks come with a lifetime warranty. Seriously, send them back if they need any darning. They’re well made, US sourced and designed with active lifestyles in mind.

I love their over-the-calf socks for skiing and snowboarding. They’re warm and wonderful and costs about $24 a pair.

Roces Ski Boots

Roces Ski Boots are the best inventions I’ve ever seen. Every parent knows that kids grow, but we don’t love spending tons of cash each year for new ski boots.

Enter Roces Ski Boots. With the twist of a metal ring your child’s ski boot can expand four sizes. They cost just $99!

Skis

I should have a great recommendation for a kids ski brand for you, but honestly I recommend buying used skis from your local ski shop.

Every year when the season rentals come in in the spring, my local shop offers some at a steep discount to purchase.

These are what I go for. My kids don’t need new skis – they’re beginners. They’re going to ski over rocks and chip the edges anyway so I much prefer putting them in used skis.

Buff Polar Face Cover

Buff sent me a polar Buff last winter that I have put to good use. Why do I love it? You can use them as a stocking hat, neck warmer, face cover or even a tube top mini skirt for your three-year-old (click and scroll down).

The Buff Polar Buff costs $17 to 30 depending on whether you catch one on sale.

Hestra Gloves

The best ski gloves for adults that I’ve ever tried actually belong to Mountain Dad. Hestra’s Heli Gloves are waterproof, fleece-lined and perfect for winter.

But they are expensive. Don’t lose these $144 pair of gloves.

Babysitting

I know this isn’t a typical skier gift, but it is the one way that I’ve been able to snowboard in the last ten years. If you can’t afford to give your ski family anything else, offer to babysit so they can hit the slopes!

VeyoKids Toddler Mittyz

VeyoKids Toddler Mittyz are my favorite toddler mitts.

For toddlers you don’t even need thumbs. They’re waterproof, colorful, have sleeve gaiters to keep snow out of kids coats and are super warm.

If there are ski kids in your fam get yourself a pair of VeyoKids Mittyz for $39.99.

Base layers

We love merino wool base layers for kids.

A good quality base layer makes a world of difference when you’re out playing in the snow. Our favorite brands of base layers for kids are Ella’s Wool and Luvmother.

Made from merino wool, which has natural wicking properties and odor neutralizers, these base layers are a warm and soft option for kids. And they doesn’t itch – seriously. We LOVE ours.

At $39 for a shirt and $39 for pants, these thermal underwear

Edgie Wedgie

This is essential for any beginner child under the age of seven. This little elastic clips to the front of both skis and saves SOO MUCH hassle. Young kids don’t quite have the leg strength to keep their skis in proper position all the time so this cheap little gadget saves so much wasted time and energy.

Get an Edgie Wedgie (also called a tip-to-tip connector) for less than $20.
