Changing Habits to Go Green

For the last two years I’ve been making little changes to help my family be more eco-friendly. We love the outdoors and want to help take care of it, but have only improved our habits after a lot of trial and error.

Some ways to go green that I personally tried, I quickly abandoned. For example, I no longer take my own containers to the butcher counter to avoid packaging waste on meat and cheese. I got sick of explaining why I wanted the grocery store employee to put my fish and cold cuts in pyrex instead of plastic bags.

Some ways to go green that my family tried quickly became our new normal. Like selling our second car. My husband and I both work from home so we didn’t need two cars. I don’t miss the expense of maintaining and insuring a second car one bit and the inconvenience of having just one car only comes up maybe once a month. I can live with that.

I believe that my family’s attempts to live a little more eco-friendly have always been worthwhile – even when the changes didn’t last. Making an effort to change is valuable in itself. It helps us become the best versions of ourselves.

That’s why I’m excited for this month’s GO GREEN challenge! I want to help your family try something new to help the earth.

Tips for Eco-Friendly Families

When you join this Go Green Challenge you’ll receive a FREE downloadable pdf of 50 Ways to Go Green that I’ve Personally Tried. I want to give you ideas of how you can change some habits to be a little better for the planet.

As you consider what habits to change, keep these environmentally-friendly tips in mind.

  1. Adopt a minimalist mentality. The fewer items you allow into your home, the fewer items you have to maintain and eventually throw out or recycle.
  2. Reduce Waste. Stop the addiction to single use items like paper napkins, plastic straws, disposible plates, and throw-away shopping bags.
  3. Recycle.
  4. Reuse. I now primarily shop at thrift stores not for a financial reason (although it is less expensive) but because I can give a second life to quality clothes and home items.
  5. Consider alternative energy for your home and vehicle.
  6. Examine your transportation, food and water sources.

Talk to your family about the changes you could make. Not sure what to say? Read this EXCELLENT post from my friend over at WikeBaby.com on how to teach children the value of the earth.

It gives a step-by-step plan on how to implement change, and if you complete this April Go Green Challenge, you can be awarded a certificate from WikeBaby.com for your efforts.
